Meta Unveils Aria Gen 2 Smart Glasses: Enhanced Eye-Tracking and 3D Hand Tracking for Future AR Innovations
Meta has unveiled new details about Aria Gen 2, the latest iteration of its experimental smart glasses aimed at advancing research in augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics. The glasses, announced in February, are positioned as a platform for exploring future innovations that could transform the next wave of computing devices. Aria Gen 2 introduces several enhancements over its predecessor, which was released in 2020 and was also exclusively available to researchers. One of the standout features is an advanced eye-tracking system capable of tracking the gaze of each eye individually, detecting blinks, and estimating the center of the pupils. This level of detail provides a deeper understanding of the wearer's visual attention and intentions, opening up new avenues for human-computer interaction (HCI). Equipped with four computer vision cameras, the glasses can now perform 3D hand and object tracking with greater precision. According to Meta, this capability is crucial for enabling complex tasks such as "dexterous robot hand manipulation." The device also includes a photoplethysmography sensor integrated into the nose pad, which can estimate the wearer's heart rate. Additionally, a contact microphone enhances audio quality in noisy environments, making communication clearer and more effective. To improve the user experience in various settings, Aria Gen 2 incorporates a new ambient light sensor. This sensor helps the glasses distinguish between indoor and outdoor lighting conditions, ensuring optimal performance in both environments. The design also features folding arms for the first time, making the glasses more portable and easier to store. Weighing approximately 75 grams, the glasses come in eight different sizes to accommodate a wider range of users. Meta intends to open applications for researchers interested in working with Aria Gen 2 later this year. This initiative builds on the company's success with the Ray-Ban smart glasses, a popular form factor that Meta aims to expand further with its upcoming Orion AR glasses. Rumors suggest potential partnerships with Oakley and the development of a high-end pair of "Hypernova" glasses, which will include a built-in screen. The unveiling of Aria Gen 2 marks a significant step forward in Meta's efforts to push the boundaries of wearable technology and pave the way for more sophisticated and user-friendly AR devices in the future. By providing researchers with these advanced tools, Meta hopes to gather valuable insights and data that will inform the development of its next-generation consumer products.
